How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?

Like the old adage goes, you get to Carnegie Hall by practicing. But research has shown in this article in Time magazine that it’s not how much you practice but HOW you practice that makes the difference.

Play an instrument? Don’t worry, the Alexandria Citizens Band has no practice requirements (but we hope you do practice at least a little bit). And we don’t even care if you haven’t played in a while. Dust off your horn and come join us. With a little practice, we guarantee that you’ll be back up to speed in no time!

It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Don’t Have That Swing – Band

Swing band practice starts THIS Friday evening, January, 20th at 7pm before concert band rehearsal.

We could use any of the following:

Saxes (alto, tenor, bari)
Bass (string or tuba)
Drum Set

As usual, we expect to play one of the Market Square concerts (specific date TBD). If the full band participates in the Charlottesville festival, we may get a chance to play also in this festival.

Research Shows Musicians Have Higher IQs

While research is still ongoing, Oboe-a-gogo has a sneaking suspicion that oboists score significantly higher than brass players.

A new study has concluded that musicians have IQ scores than non-musicians, supporting other recent research that intensive musical training is associated with an elevated IQ score.

Play an instrument? Why don’t you come out and join the band? We’re always looking for new players! Rehearsals are on Friday nights from 8-10pm at Minnie Howard School in Alexandria, VA.
