Hello – I am a clarinet player new to the area from Wisconsin and am interested in joining the band. I have played in community bands since 2000 and have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in music. I also play piano. Who should I contact to inquire about joining the band?

    • Hello Jacque,

No auditions, but please bring a music stand when we resume rehearsals in September. The Swing Band rehearses at 7:00 and the Concert Band rehearses at 8:00 pm.

Hello! I sent an email to the email address listed on your contact page nearly a month ago, but still have not heard back.

I play the flute and was wondering if your community band had room for one more. I am not a professional flutist, nor did I major in music. I just love playing! Are you accepting musicians for your community band at this time?

    • Hello again Melissa, Please join us Friday at 8:00 pm at the Del Ray United Methodist Church. Bring a stand. No auditions required. We have rusty musicians as well as excellent amateurs who all love playing!

I am interested in playing in the Swing Band if there is an opening for trombone. I have over a decade of big band experience, with roughly 8 of those years as lead trombone. I also compose and arrange for big band. I am of course open to playing a variety of parts throughout a set. Please contact me if there is an opening or if you are interested in some novel charts to add to the book.

    Good Morning:

I am a French horn player and band teacher in Alexandria. I would be interested in joining this ensemble. I have not had many playing opportunities since moving to VA 2 years ago. What is the process to join and when/where do rehearsals take place?

    Best regards,

    Todd Mulder

    • Oboe-a-gogo says:

We’d love to have you! Come on by Friday evening at 8pm to Del Ray UMC and bring a stand. We have music.

    • Emily says:

      Hi Todd,
I wanted to reach out. I know it’s been almost year, but if you’re still interested in joining us, we’d love to have you! We have lost our entire French horn section over the past year (one passed away and two relocated).

8pm Fridays at Del Ray United Methodist Church – Lunceford Hall

      Hope to see you soon,
      Emily

  5. Jade says:

Hello my name is Jade and I play flute and piccolo. I’m new to the area and was looking for a community band to join. What is the process of doing so?

  6. Tom Novotny says:

I am relocating in January and have years of experience in concert bands, most recently with the Coastal Communities Concert Band in San Diego…best group I have ever been in. I play primarily bass clarinet but also b-flat and other odd instruments, including all the saxes. I will look forward to coming to a rehearsal in Early jan if that is ok. I should be living in Old Towne so not too far away. Played bari and tenor in lots of swing bands also.

    Cheers, Tom Novotny

  7. Drew Hanessian says:

Hello, I recently moved to the D.C. area and am interested in getting back into trumpet playing. I’ll make sure to buy a stand and be ready. Will there be a rehearsal next Friday November 20th? And is anyone in the band participating in Tuba Christmas? Thanks and have a good one,

    Drew

    • Oboe-a-gogo says:

Hi Drew, we have a concert at a local nursing home that evening. Next week is Thanksgiving. Catch us first Friday in December!

I don’t know if anyone is doing Tuba Christmas. In the past, a few people from the band have so ask around.

  8. Josh says:

We just recently moved here from TX and are looking for a group that can help challenge our daughter. She was excelling with her trumpet at her school in TX but since moving here (2 months ago) the music program she is in has been horrible (she does not fill challenged). What are your age and experience requirements? Also can you recommend any other possible coaches or programs in the area to help her continue growing with her music?

    • Oboe-a-gogo says:

There are no age requirements. We have a high school student that has been playing with us for a few years because he can’t fit band into his schedule. We also have had homeschool students play with us as well. Our band director is a professional trumpet player and can give you resources on teachers in the area. Also the Northern VA Community College has a summer music camp in July for students. You daughter is welcome to come out and play with us. Just come on by any Friday night when there is a rehearsal and bring a stand. We’ll have music.

  10. Gabrielle Shea says:

    Hello,

I will be moving to Arlington this June, and I really want to get back into playing my alto saxophone. I loved band in elementary, middle, and high school, and I played at the all-county level. However, I haven’t had much of an opportunity to play in college, and I really miss playing. I will be pretty rusty for the first week or so, but I am determined to practice and get back up to speed. I am traveling from June 3-18, but I could start on June 24. Would this be okay? Let me know, and I look forward to hopefully joining your group!

    Sincerely,
    Gabrielle

I just moved to Alexandria after 2 years in Okinawa, Japan where there were no playing opportunities. Before that I was principal horn in Savannah Winds in Georgia and a freelance horn player in England for many years. Yes I am 65, but have a Master’s in Horn Performance, blah blah. Just would like to play. Mike

You seem to have many flute players! Would you consider one more? I haven’t played in a year+ but used to play in your band many years ago. I’d like to join you. Please let me know if you can take one more flute player.

    Thanks,
    Lisa

  15. Len Allman says:

Good morning. Having read about your music storage situation, I’m wondering if you have any concert band sheet music to “recycle.” The Catawba Valley New Horizons Band in Hickory, NC,which I direct, would be most grateful if you would consider us when and if you do so. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit ensemble of 37 adult beginners and”restarers” that began with 8 members in 2009. Most of our musicians are retired except for two who are full time practicing Pediatricians. We rehearse most Wednesday and perform several times each season for seniors church groups, retirement communities, libraries and elementary schools. Thank you for considering us.

  16. Nathan Pereda says:

    Hey there,
I have read up a bit of the information, and understand the times and days that you meet.

Is there a particular level of skill one needs to have in order to join? I have been playing the trumpet for a couple of months only, but am not a part of any band or orchestra. Would like to know what I could do.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Cordially, Nate.

    • Emily says:

      Hi Nate,
We accept all levels, but our repertoire is mostly at Stars and Stripes are harder. You are welcome to come play with us any time, though! We’re an understanding bunch.
